Restful sleep is a daily source of rejuvenation. It is a time when your mind and body renews itself. Good sleep is essential for preserving your health and beauty and is sometimes referred to as beauty sleep.

How do you know if you are getting restful sleep?

  • You get to sleep easily, and naturally

  • You rarely wake up in the middle of the night, but if you do , you go back to sleep easily

  • You wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, clearheaded and ready to enjoy your day

  • You have energy and vitality throughout your day

Here are some tips for restful sleep:

  1. A daily routine is very important in insuring you get proper rest. “Early to bed and early to rise” is actually very wise. Go to bed at the same time every night, ideally around 10 pm and get up at the same time each morning ideally around 6 am. A consistent routine restores your body’s natural rhythms which is vital for restful sleep.

  2. Make your evening meal light and eat at least three hours before bedtime. Your digestion is at its peak in the afternoon. Make your afternoon meal the largest meal of the day and eat lighter in the evening. Going to bed on a full stomach increases metabolic activity, which works against settling down for sleep.

  3. Make sure you get some type of physical activity or exercise each day. Life is a dynamic balance of rest and activity. Walking is balancing to your mind and body. Try walking after lunch or dinner to help you digest your meal and relax.

  4. Allow time to wind down in the evening. Stimulating mental activities (including phone, tv, computer) and strenuous physical activity right before bedtime can activate your system and make it more difficult to get restful sleep. Give yourself 30 minutes to wind down.

  5. Use sensory therapies to promote sleep naturally. We experience everything through our five senses. Overstimulating our senses is said to be a major cause of insomnia. On the other hand, sensory therapies are powerful tools you can use to balance and relax the body and mind. Make your bedroom a restful, rejuvenating place by decorating it with soothing, calming colors and dim the lights. Before bed try putting on relaxing music and fill the air with pleasing, relaxing aromas such a lavender or sandalwood. Massage the bottoms of your feet with warm oil, and enjoy a glass of calming tea or warm milk.

During sleep your body repairs and recreates itself. Honor yourself and assist it in this miracle.
