5 Bathtime Rituals

Since ancient times, bathing rituals have been used to beautify, purify, and rejuvenate the mind and body. By incorporating healing therapies that nourish the five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch and taste) you can turn an ordinary bath into a beauty and wellness self-care practice.

Following are a number of suggestions that incorporate all five senses into the bath ritual:

  1. SIGHT: Make your bathroom pleasing to the eye. Soothing colors, a clean environment, candle light, and fresh flowers, all make for a pleasurable experience. Make your bathroom a place where you want to spend time nurturing yourself.

  2. SOUND: Set the mood with music. Sounds can have a soothing effect on our entire being. Listen to soothing music while bathing. Particularly enjoyable are the sounds of nature, including rain, the ocean and singing birds.

  3. TOUCH: Incorporate healing touch into your bath ritual by doing a self-massage (Ābhyanga) before your bath or shower. Learn how here

  4. SMELL: Delight yourself with plant and flower essences. Herbs and flowers can be used to create a luscious scent and even more importantly, for their therapeutic effects. The easiest way to incorporate aromatherapy into your bath ritual is with an herbal or essential oil infused body oil. It can be used for massage or a few drops can be put in your bath water.

  5. TASTE: End your bathing ritual with a nourishing drink. Take the time to be in the moment and enjoy a cup of herbal tea or freshly prepared juice.

Each of us deserves to look and feel our best. This means taking the time to nurture and care for ourselves. Bath time is a great time to do this.
